Dinosaur Extravaganza!

Happy 7th Birthday HC!

Henry wants to be a paleontologist when he grows up. He loves dinosaurs, loves to read encyclopedias about dinosaurs and knows more about them then any seven year old around. The Jurassic World movie recently came out so it seemed like a great year for a dinosaur party. Henry really wanted it to be more of a paleontologist party however, so I did my best to incorporate as many informative dinosaur fossil activities as I could and still present them in the form of a fun game or activity suitable for a birthday party.

We had recently moved and barely got the carpet installed in the living room the day before the party. There was no furniture upstairs but no problem, our new backyard would make the perfect backdrop for the party. Unfortunately, it rained all day and we had to move the party inside. We had a great time nonetheless.

Make your own Fossil

We pressed and flattened a ball of crayola air dry clay into a cut paper cup. We could then make a dinosaur track using the foot of a plastic dinosaur toy.

We added water to their plaster of paris, stirred, and poured it in over their foot print. We sent these home with the kids to dry over night.

Dino Egg Hunt

We then split into two teams for the...

Egg and Spoon Relay

And the Crack the Egg Game.

Candy-filled white balloons in a nest had to be cracked (popped) open. The first team to hatch all of their eggs wins.

We then split up into smaller groups for stations...

Fossil Dig Bingo Style

They had to dig and sift through the sand to find the buried Safari Toob Fossils. When the fossils where unburied they could identify them by matching them up to the bingo card. The first to find three in a row wins.

 Fossil Sort
Use magnifying glasses and fossil guide to identify and sort real fossils.

Skull Match Game

Using  dino toob skulls, match the dino skull to the right dino using the dino cards.
The kids were amazing at this! They knew their dinosaurs!

They each got their own Dino Egg to crack open.

The dino eggs were made from coffee grounds, flour and water.

A messy and fun activity. Luckily they took this out on the back deck.

We saved the best for last...
The Sandbox Dino Dig

We hid cement t-rex pieces in the sand box. They had to find the pieces using brushes and shovels then assemble the t-rex skeleton. A special thanks to Chris for building the new sandbox! Even though we just moved, he made it a priority to build the sandbox before the party. It turned out even better than our last one at the old house. Even though it was pouring rain, all of the little paleontologist stayed nice and dry under the tarp! Way to go Dad!

After a hard dig...Cake Time!

And present time!

The Decorations...

The dinosaurs would have looked much cooler sticking up all around the backyard. We had to stick them in  pots of beans instead. Ha Ha

Happy birthday my little paleontologist!
